It's been over 3 years since A Cat Called Cricket’s debut Here Comes Another Melody captivated fans and listeners with its “patchwork of uplifting melodies, driving cello rhythms and nifty groundbreaking folk-pop” (Smother.net). After some lineup changes, changes of address, and a few other growing pains, Cricket seems to be all grown up.
On their latest endeavor, an EP entitled When Leaves Fall, the band captures raw emotions and frames them in rich, full production. While the band’s earlier songs were products of the basement, this time the recording was split between the musicians’ homes and the studio, resulting in a mixture of bedroom intimacy and big-studio sonic detail.
With When Leaves Fall, A Cat Called Cricket presents a tighter, more mature sound, but delivers it with the same passion the band has always displayed. Continuing to draw connections between nature and human nature, Alex Champagne’s lyrics draw you in and keep you warm like a campfire, with Amy Reid’s chilling backup vocals providing the perfect counterpoint. Piano, organ, and cello lines are woven into a blanket of lush beautiful melodies—familiar sounds and feelings from this band of merry-makers—but “When Leaves Fall” isn't as merry a release as we're used to. These songs are an intimate account of desire and disconnect, their somber mood standing apart from the band’s other work thus far.
But don’t expect A Cat Called Cricket to stay in one place for long. The band is already planning their next release: a louder and more upbeat set of songs that should surface in 2011.
